\nNEW JERSEY\/NEW YORK: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan\u2019s economy is stabilising at the micro level, with inflation falling and interest rates reduced, and praised overseas Pakistanis for their support.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He spoke to the media here on Saturday after delivering a landmark speech at the UN General Assembly in New York.<\/p>\n
\u201cJust a few years ago, the country faced serious challenges,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen we took office, inflation was at 32%, and the policy rate was 22.5%.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“In just one and a half years, inflation has fallen into single digits, and the policy rate is down to 11%. At the micro level, the economy is now stable.\u201d<\/p>\n
He described overseas Pakistanis as \u201cgreat ambassadors\u201d of the country, noting that they sent remittances $38.5 billion home in the fiscal year 2024-25 alone.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cTheir support has been crucial for Pakistan\u2019s economic stability,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Talking about his international visits, the prime minister termed his reception in Saudi Arabia as \u201cunprecedented in the last 40 years\u201d and called his meeting with US President Donald Trump \u201cvery encouraging.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
To a question, the premier said the US was ready to invest in Pakistan\u2019s trade, IT, and other sectors.<\/p>\n
\u201cDuring the meeting with President Trump, we discussed the economy, counter-terrorism, minerals, artificial intelligence, IT, and cryptocurrency,\u201d the PM added.<\/p>\n
\u00a0\u201cI also thanked the US president on tariff issues, while minerals pricing and trade agreements between Pakistan and the US will be decided fairly and in mutual interest.\u201d<\/p>\n
Shehbaz also reflected on Pakistan\u2019s military achievements.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cFrom May 6 to 10, our armed forces bravely defeated India in the war. We shot down seven enemy planes and carried out strikes at Delhi, Pathankot, and many other locations,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He credited Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir for his leadership.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Field Marshal guided our forces wisely. On the morning of May 10, the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with him, and we received a message from India that they wanted a ceasefire. We had already won the war. We accepted the ceasefire to avoid further escalation,\u201d the prime minister said.<\/p>\n
Recalling the change in India\u2019s attitude, he added, \u201cThose who once never spoke properly to you are now embracing you, which shows the strength and courage of our armed forces and the victory we achieved.\u201d<\/p>\n
PM discusses IWT, floods with UN’s\u00a0Guterres\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n
Earlier, PM Shehbaz met UN Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres in New York. He told the UN chief that the world body needs to step up and play a stronger role in tackling global problems.<\/p>\n
The prime minister praised Guterres for his work in promoting peace and stability worldwide. He also thanked the UN for acknowledging Pakistan\u2019s flood relief efforts. \u201cThousands of people were affected,\u201d he said, \u201cand the UN\u2019s recognition really matters.\u201d<\/p>\n
Shehbaz stressed that countries hit hardest by climate change need extra support.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He also raised the Kashmir issue, noting India\u2019s decision to keep the 65-year-old Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) in abeyance, and urged the UN to ensure fair action.<\/p>\n
Turning to Gaza, the prime minister called for an immediate ceasefire. He said aid must reach people fast, and a Palestinian state should be established. \u201cPakistan will continue to work for peace,\u201d he added. \u201cAs a Security Council member, we have to do our part.\u201d<\/p>\n
Guterres responded by appreciating Pakistan\u2019s consistent efforts at the UN. He noted that the country has played a practical role, helping maintain dialogue and stability on global issues.<\/p>\n
Pakistan means peace, PM tells UNGA<\/h2>\n
In his landmark address, Shehbaz told the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) that Pakistan sought peace in the region after it delivered a \u201cbloody nose\u201d to India in the May conflict.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have won the war, and now we seek to win peace in our part of the world, and this is my most sincere and serious offer before this assembly of the world nations,\u201d the prime minister said at the August forum in New York.<\/p>\n
Pakistan and India engaged in a four-day fight \u2014 their worst in decades \u2014 after New Delhi\u2019s unprovoked assault on Islamabad following a terrorist attack in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir. India blames Pakistan for the attack, a charge that Islamabad has vehemently denied.<\/p>\n
“Last year, from this very podium, I had warned that Pakistan would act \u2014 and act most decisively \u2014 against any external aggression. Those words of mine proved true. I hoped they would not. But then, that is destiny,” the prime minister stressed.<\/p>\n
In May this year, he recalled, “My country confronted unprovoked aggression from our eastern front. The enemy came shrouded in arrogance; we sent them back in humiliation, delivering a bloody nose”.<\/p>\n
\u201cIndia sought to extract political gains from a human tragedy by spurning my sincere offer of an independent international investigation into the Pahalgam incident,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Shehbaz leaves for London via Geneva<\/h2>\n
After completing his visit to the US, PM Shehbaz left New York for London via Geneva.<\/p>\n
Sources said the prime minister will stop in Geneva to visit former prime minister Nawaz Sharif. <\/p>\n
He will also brief the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leadership on his US trip.<\/p>\n
Shehbaz is expected to reach London on Saturday, where he will stay for three days, sources added.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
